What Is Digital?
‘Digital’ is the name for the way the UK will receive TV signal in the future. In the past & also at present (in most areas) we receive TV reception via an ‘Analogue’ signal.
By 2012 the whole country will have ‘switched over’ to digital signal, which means that analogue TV’s /DVD’s/Video recorders will no longer receive broadcasts.
| Region | Switchover |
|---|---|
| Border | 2008 - 09 |
| West Country | 2009 |
| Granada | 2009 |
| Wales | 2009 - 10 |
| West, STV North | 2010 - 11 |
| STV Central | 2010 - 11 |
| Central | 2011 |
| Yorkshire | 2011 |
| Anglia | 2011 |
| Meridian,London | 2012 |

One of the main reasons for this change is to give us better quality viewing in the future (Much the same way as we changed from Black & White to Colour).
What Do I Need?
Make sure your equipment is ready to receive digital signal. This does not necessarily mean buying a new television & spending a fortune.
In most cases simply purchasing a digital set top box & connecting it to your existing TV will allow that TV to receive digital signal – you will need one set top box for each non digital TV in your house (Set top boxes can be purchased for under £20 in most leading stores).
Note: By connecting a set top box to your TV will allow that TV to receive digital signal, BUT your existing DVD or Video recorder may not work after switchover.
Always look for the digital tick logo (above) on any equipment you buy to ensure the product will be ready for the switchover
